Moderation

Ban, kick, timeout, mute and jail, voice actions, bulk role changes, and the checks Epix makes before it acts.

The moderation commands act on one member at a time, and the undo commands can also act on everyone at once. Before acting, Epix checks both that you may act on that member and that it can; if either check fails, the reply says which, and nothing changes.

Everything here works as soon as the bot is in your server. The mute and jail roles are created the first time you need them.

Reasons are recorded in Discord's audit log. A ban without a reason is recorded as "by:" followed by your username; the other commands record "no reason given".

The checks before an action

For /ban, /kick, /timeout and /untimeout, Epix refuses when:

  • the target is you, or the server owner;
  • the target has Administrator;
  • the target's highest role is not below yours, unless you are the owner;
  • the target's highest role is not below Epix's.

Mute and jail are role changes: Epix checks that it can give the role, but does not compare your rank with the member's. Voice mute and deafen do not compare ranks either. Hand those permissions only to staff you trust with them.

Timeout

Timeout uses Discord's built-in timeout, so it ends by itself. The duration is required and takes the short forms 30s, 10m, 1h or 7d; Discord caps a timeout at 28 days.

Mute

  • The mute role is created the first time someone uses /mute: a role named Muted with no permissions, denied Send Messages in every channel. If the role already exists, any channel missing that deny is fixed each time someone is muted, and new text channels get it automatically.
  • Without a duration, a mute uses the server's default mute length if one is set; otherwise it lasts until /unmute.
  • Timed mutes are lifted automatically. Epix checks once a minute.
  • A muted member who leaves and rejoins gets the role back, until the mute runs out.
  • If the mute role is deleted, the next /mute creates a new one and gives it back to everyone still muted.
  • Automod's mute punishment uses this same role.

Jail

Jail hides the server from a member except for the jail channels: a place to talk to them, or to hold someone while you look into a report.

  • The jail role is created on first use: a role named Jailed with no permissions. It is denied View Channel in every channel except voice and stage channels, which are not changed, and allowed View Channel and Send Messages in the jail channels.
  • /jail settings picks up to 10 jail channels (text or announcement). The choice is saved at once and, if the jail role exists, its permissions are re-applied to every channel. The panel closes after 2 minutes.
  • New text channels are hidden from the jail role automatically.
  • A jailed member who leaves and rejoins is jailed again.

Undoing in bulk

  • /unmute user:all and /unjail user:all remove the role from every member who has it, and /untimeout user:all clears every active timeout. Each looks at the first 1,000 members of the server only.
  • /unban user:all lifts up to 1,000 bans per run.
  • The reply says how many succeeded and how many failed.

On /unban, /unmute, /unjail and /untimeout the user option is plain text, so paste the member's user ID rather than a mention. /unban also accepts the full username or display name of someone on the ban list.

Roles

/role toggles one role on one member. /rolemulti adds or removes a role for all members, humans only or bots only; by default it adds, to everyone. It replies at once with an estimate and then works through the list in the background, one member per second, and it has a 30-second cooldown.

Both commands refuse:

  • a role on the server's blocked list, for anyone, the owner included;
  • @everyone, and roles managed by an integration;
  • a role at or above your own highest role, unless you are the owner;
  • a role holding a permission you do not have, out of Administrator, Manage Server, Manage Roles, Manage Channels, Ban Members, Kick Members, Mention Everyone, Manage Webhooks, Manage Emojis and Stickers, Timeout Members and Manage Events, unless you are the owner;
  • a role that Epix's own role does not outrank.

The server's allowed list lets members without Manage Roles use /role for those roles. The rules above still apply, so the role has to sit below the member's own highest role. /rolemulti always needs Manage Roles.

Server settings

The default mute length, the default jail length, and the allowed and blocked role lists have no command of their own. Set them by asking Epix AI, for example "make the default mute one hour"; it needs you to have Manage Server, and it can also point mute or jail at a role you already have instead of the auto-created one. Epix AI in Discord and on the dashboard needs Premium or credit; through Epix MCP it is free.

Limiting how often staff can act

Moderation commands such as /ban, /kick, /timeout and /mute can be capped with /protection setlimit: a number of uses (1–1,000) per time window of up to one day, per member, per role, or as one total for the whole server. Setting a limit needs Administrator.

/protection setlimit command:timeout time:1h limit:10
/protection setlimit command:ban time:1d limit:5 role:@Moderator

Permissions Epix needs

ForEpix needs
Ban and unbanBan Members
KickKick Members
TimeoutTimeout Members
Mute, jail and rolesManage Roles, with Epix's role above the mute and jail roles and above any role it gives
Voice mute and deafenMute Members, Deafen Members

Discord's hierarchy rule applies on top: Epix cannot act on a member whose highest role is above its own, even with Administrator.

Troubleshooting

  • "I can't assign the jail role — it ranks above me", which /mute also shows: drag Epix's role above Jailed or Muted in your server's role list.
  • "That is not a valid user ID" on /unmute, /unjail, /untimeout or /unban: paste the numeric user ID, not a mention.
  • "No mute role is set up yet" on /unmute: the role is created by the first /mute, so there is nobody to unmute.
  • A muted member can still talk in voice or reply in threads: see the note under Mute.
  • A timed jail did not end: jails are released with /unjail.
