Levelling and XP
Set up levelling: XP rates, cooldowns, level rewards and leaderboards.
Levelling awards XP for taking part and hands out roles as members pass thresholds. The defaults are deliberately slow — a server that levels people quickly runs out of rewards in a fortnight.
How XP is awarded
A member earns XP for a message, subject to a cooldown. The cooldown, not the amount, is what controls pace: without it, a fast conversation hands out more XP in a minute than a quiet day does in an hour, and levelling becomes a measure of typing speed.
| Setting | Default | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| XP per message | 15–25, random | The award. Randomised so the exact number is not worth gaming. |
| Cooldown | 60 seconds | How often a member can earn. The real pacing control. |
| Ignored channels | none | Channels that award nothing — bot-command and spam channels belong here. |
| Ignored roles | none | Roles that earn nothing. Usually bots and muted members. |
| Multipliers | none | Per-role or per-channel scaling, applied to the award. |
Level rewards
A reward is a role granted at a level. Decide one thing before you add any: whether reaching level 20 replaces the level 10 role or adds to it.
- Stacking rewards keep every role a member has earned. The role list grows, and a member's history is visible at a glance.
- Replacing rewards remove the previous tier as the next is granted, so a member holds exactly one levelling role.
Announcements
Level-ups can announce in the channel where they happened, in a fixed channel, or nowhere. In a busy server, a fixed channel is the option that does not bury conversation — and "nowhere" is a real answer if the rewards speak for themselves.
Congratulations {user.mention}, you reached level {level}!
